StevenFabian, MD

Dr. Fabian grew up near Detroit and attended the University of Michigan, where he majored in Cellular and Molecular Biology. After graduation, he worked in HIV/AIDS research in San Francisco and New York City. He later received his MD degree at Washington University in St. Louis and finished his internal medicine residency at the University of Colorado. After five years as a hospitalist at Rose Medical Center in Denver, he moved to Boston, where he completed his nephrology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s and Massachusetts General Hospitals. During this time, he characterized a novel molecular pathway upregulated in kidney fibrosis, providing new potential targets for future therapies in chronic kidney disease. He published his results in a respected medical journal and gave an oral presentation at a large nephrology conference; however, after years of basic science research, it became clear he is most at home taking care of patients.

He returned to Colorado and has been practicing nephrology in the Denver area since 2012. He is experienced in all areas of nephrology – including chronic and acute kidney diseases, hypertension, electrolyte disturbances, kidney stones, and all forms of renal replacement therapies, including in‐center hemodialysis, home hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and post‐transplant follow‐up. His mission is to offer thoughtful personalized guidance to patients and their loved ones through effective listening and communication. He takes the time to educate patients so they understand their clinical condition and are confident they are making informed decisions that optimize their wellbeing. Dr. Fabian is also continuously educating himself so that patients are given the most effective and up‐to‐date care. Finally, he is responsive and readily available to both patients and the other providers involved in their care ‐ expeditiously relaying tests results and quickly responding to questions and concerns so that anxieties are alleviated, and potential problems are dealt with proactively.

Away from work he looks forward to spending time with his supportive wife and two teenage children. Having learned to ski on landfills when growing up near Detroit, he now takes advantage of the opportunity to ski the beautiful mountains of Colorado with family and friends. When the weather and his aging body permit, he delights in going for long runs in the Denver area, where the Rocky Mountains never seem far from view. He also enjoys reading and traveling, and is an avid guitar player.
